Effective Algorithm for Image Compression Using DCT

Abstract

This paper focuses on image compression methods that minimize data redundancies in digital representation. It examines coding redundancy, interpixel redundancy, and psycho-visual redundancy. Huffman coding, in combination with the Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT), enhances image compression efficiency. DCT serves as the foundation of the current JPEG standard, optimizing energy distribution across an image. Comparisons are made with Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT), highlighting its benefits for scalable compression. The study discusses recent developments such as JPEG-2000, based on DWT technology.
