Abstract
Microplastics are widespread particles present across environmental mediums such as marine ecosystems, coastal sediments, land, and air. Their persistence in these ecosystems poses significant risks. This review assesses the occurrence, sources, and impact of microplastics in coastal sediments, comparing Nigerian research to global studies. Sampling techniques, identification methods, and classification mechanisms for microplastics are explored, alongside their transportation pathways and sociological effects. The study identifies research gaps and suggests mitigation strategies for future work.
